The House Edge and How It Works

Once you are ready to play at an online casino with real money, it is valuable to learn the odds and probabilities of the most popular games. Very often new players register and expect to have substantial wins from the first game they play and get disappointed when the outcome is not what they expected.

Skills and luck are important in games at both online and land-based casinos, however to get the most substantial return, you cannot rely solely on them without taking into consideration the games with best and worst odds. The casinos beat players not because they are lucky, but because they hold the advantage in all games. This is called the House Edge or Casino Advantage. Usually the lower the house edge is, the higher odds you have of winning and vice versa.

Games with a low house edge:

  1. BlackJack: 0.2 – 2%

Blackjack is a classic card game, which is also known as 21. The casino advantage here varies from game to game, depending on the rules. In some games, the casino advantage can be as low as 0.2%, while in others it reaches 2%, which is also still relatively low.

  1. Video Poker: 0.5 – 5%

Video poker is a five-card game played on a computerized console. There are many variations of the game with the casino advantage ranging between 0.5% and 5%.

  1. Baccarat: 1-15%

Baccarat is quite popular, because of the tiny house edges. It is a simple game and requires the player to guess who will win: the bank or the player, or you can put on a tie. Betting on the bank will bring you a house edge of around 1-1.1%, while betting on the player – 1.2%. The house edge for tie, however, can be as high as 15%.

  1. Slots: 2 – 15%

Slot machines have usually the highest variations of available games and are extremely popular among gamblers.  They usually hold a house advantage of 2% to 5%, however at some games, it can be higher than 15%.

  1. Craps: 1.2 – 15%

Craps is a dice game which can be a bit overwhelming for new players as it has a lot of different possible bets. Some of them have a high house edge, while others such as the don’t pass/don’t come bet can have a 1.2%.

Games with a high house edge:

  1. Keno: 20 – 40%

Keno is a simple lottery game. All you need to do is choose from 80 numbers, fill in, send your ticket and wait for the results. Payments are determined by the number of matches. Despite how easy it is to play, the casino advantage here ranges from 20% to 40%

  1. Progressive Slot Machines

These types of slot machines usually hold massive jackpots, however they also have one of the highest house edges – more than 15%.

It is also important to mention here that even though some games have a very low casino advantage, some bets can raise it. For example betting on a draw in the Baccarat game, or “Any 7” in Crabs will bring you a house edge of more than 15%.

Casinos will always hold the advantage over the player, however by choosing games with a lower house edge and using a strategy can definitely increase the probability of winning. Now that you are ready to roll the dice, remember that you are not going to find a way to beat the casino consistently and that you have a better chance at games with the smallest house edges. Good luck!
